LaNitra Curtis

Dean of Student Services and Support

Bio

LaNitra Curtis is a proud product of Compton, California as is her mother, a registered nurse, and my father, a retired captain of the Compton Fire Department. Curtis’ parents, her older sister and her are all graduates of Compton Senior High School. She graduated from Compton High in 1989 and proceeded on to receive my B.A. degree in Sociology from University of California, Davis in 1994. She earned my Masters in Education in 2004 from Fielding Graduate University and is currently working on an EdD in Educational Leadership for Change at Fielding.

Curtis began her teaching career as an Intern in the Teacher Credentialing Program at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Her first teaching assignment was 6th grade Core Subjects at Enterprise Middle School, Compton Unified School District. After over 20 years in Education, she can say that her passion is to create shared visions at school sites that fosters pride, cooperative citizenship and community. After seven years of dedicated service to the students in Compton, she left and joined a team at an independent charter school in Los Angeles Unified School District. She swiftly became a part of the Leadership Team and served as Department Chair for the English Department, Advisor to the Cheer Squad, Events Chair and Facilitator for several activities held for the students and staff. Curtis enjoyed her seven year term at the independent charter but left Southern California in 2009 to take the reigns as Lead Humanities Teacher at Aspire Langston Hughes Academy here in Stockton.

Curtis served as Lead Teacher, Dean of Students, Dean of Student Support and Intervention and currently holds the positions of Dean of Students once again. She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., an international service sorority and has enjoyed membership since 1992. She is currently an active graduate member of this in Sacramento CA. In alignment with her professional career working with youth, she has also served as the Youth Director and the Director of Christian Education for my church, Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in the city of Compton. She had the pleasure to serve in that capacity for over 15 years.
