This afternoon, I have the great privilege of introducing our guest of honor and speaker.. I feel elated to introduce him to everyone today. After all, he is a living inspiration to all of us, especially the young. If one takes a closer look at the alchemy of the achieving person, two distinct virtues pop up,besides perseverance and hard work. These are: loving spirit and willingness to give back to a community that has been left behind. Our guest of honor and speaker today is the living idiom of a man who happened to be born at the wrong time and at the wrong place, but the irony of it all is that he is now living at the right place in the right time. Not that everything has been perfect, because he has faced many challenges along his lifetime. Being born in a rural remote village in Battambang Cambodia with no doctors or nurses, living in a shack, eating grasshoppers and crickets to survive, having to flee his homeland when the country was in turmoil where over 2 million of his people died over hatred, and coming to a foreign place not knowing anything was very difficult. These events in his life were not easy but it made him a better person today. His life began to change for the better when he and his family were sponsored to be in America as refugees.

Growing up in Stockton has had its ups and downs. He really had trouble communicating with people in the United States because of his language. Students made fun of him based off his race, labeling him as a “free loader”, living off of government checks and food stamps. No matter what obstacles he faces, he was able to persevere. He focused on his studies in high school and was offered an academic scholarship to the University of the Pacific where he earned a degree in Management Information Systems and ultimately, became an educator for underserved students. With his unique background, it was not therefore surprising that he became a devoted educator receiving the San Joaquin County New Educator Award for Lincoln Unified School District. When asked about him… Who he is may not be a surprise. After all, he had become the person he is now because of the virtues and values that was developed and nurtured during his struggles and new found successes in life. He continues to inspire me and young people that he comes into contact every day. Without any further delay, ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to introduce my DAD, Sochum Taing.
